Antidepressants: What They Don’t Tell You

Millions of people take antidepressants, yet how much are patients actually told about these drugs before they begin treatment?

I recently joined Children’s Health Defense TV for a discussion titled “Antidepressants: What They Don’t Tell You.” We took a closer look at the risks and potential adverse effects associated with antidepressants and why patients deserve better information when making decisions about their treatment.

At RxISKS, we believe informed consent means more than simply being handed a prescription. Patients should have meaningful conversations with their healthcare providers about the potential benefits of a medication, its known risks, what to watch for after starting treatment, and the difficulties some people can experience when trying to stop.

One of the challenges with psychiatric drugs is recognizing when a new symptom or behavioral change may be related to the medication itself. When that connection is overlooked, patients may find themselves prescribed additional medications rather than having the original treatment reconsidered.

The discussion also highlights a larger issue: Are patients being given enough information to make truly informed choices about antidepressants?

These medications can have different effects from one person to another, and no discussion about them should be reduced to a simple “good” or “bad.” What matters is that people understand the potential benefits and harms and have access to accurate information about both.
