Kennedy Jr., Secretary of Health and Human Services, announced on August 28, 2025 that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will investigate whether psychiatric medications—especially SSRIs and other drugs used during gender transitions—could contribute to violent behavior. He cited “black box” warnings about suicidal and homicidal ideation and emphasized that prior privacy laws like HIPAA have hindered such research. Kennedy argued the U.S. must probe all possible causes of recent mass violence.
